Advantages of Nuclear Power

There are many positive benefits to Nuclear Power compared to Coal Power Stations.
1) Nuclear power station does not produce a by product of CO2. This gas is a major contributor to global warming and the rise in the world's temperature brings risks of flooding and even reduced temperatures in parts due to disturbance in the Gulf-Stream.

2)The energy recoverable from each tonne of nuclear fuel releases at least 10,000 times more energy than released when a tonne of coal is burnt in a power station. So the point is that they produce 10,000 times more energy than burning fossil fuels that pollute heavily. There have been nuclear power stations operating in Britain for around 40 years and they account for 25% of all the energy produced in Britain.

1) Fossil fuels are responsible for the majority of the global warming. The smog of the coal powered stations in the 1950s had an adverse affect on human health, particularly in built up areas like London, where 4000 people died in a few weeks

2.) 17% of the worlds electricity and over 20% of the UK`s is produced from nuclear power.

3.) Nuclear power creates about as little CO2 emissions as Wind Power .

4.) The massive under-funding of alternative “cleaner” sources of energy over the years by most nations has left nuclear power as being the only feasible option.

Disadvantages of Nuclear Power

1)The nuclear waste created during the process needs to be stored safely until it is no longer radioactive. This can take thousands of years and requires the use of land to do so. This is why it is treated so carefully, stored underwater at first and then in shielded containers.

2).Radioactive material in the hands of terrorists could be responsible for untold damage and death.

3).Accidents at power stations could damage the environment for thousands of years. Even 20 years after Chernobyl, there is evidence of serious effects on human health and a probable loss of 4000 lives, in addition to the 31 who died at the time.

4).Transport of nuclear waste is very difficult and will contaminate the areas that it passes through.

5)The main problem with Nuclear Power is that if there is an accident, the area would be contaminated by radiation
The other worry would be if terrorists got hold of the material and made a 'dirty bomb' which could be released in a city centre.

THERE IS NO NUCLEAR WASTE ROUND HERE...
